What if the Angel Warned

Noctua Review, 2012
Southern Connecticut State University Poetry Contest winner

     Don’t look back, Don’t mourn
     your past, days of pomegranate
juice, tart promise on your tongue.

      Run. Forget your garden,
     neighbors, friends.
     Get out while you can.

     Map the route. Bring woolens
     for mountain weather.
     Hold photos close to hand.

My linen skirt grows limp, dispirited, snags
on brambles, tendrils shred to stubbornness,
a winding sheet.

Hair heavies, limbs refuse to sprint.
What about my irises, their purple lips
arrayed against orange poppies?

My last thought as I turn,
engulfed by curtains of regret—
how glorious to savor salt on melon.
